Monica Wyrick, Illustrator

Monica is a lifelong artist with a great eye for detail, color and whimsy. Her love for the history, tradition and craftsmanship of the Celts led to create her own line of artwork.  The stylized features of the ancient Book of Kells along with the unique stories of the lives of the saints serve as inspiration for the pieces. She is also a seasoned studio artist, and children’s book illustrator. Among her titles and workbooks, she has illustrated two titles for Audrey Penn.

Ira David Wood III, HOOPLA! Guest Judge

Founder and Executive Director of Raleigh’s Theatre In The Park, David has been a longtime friend of mine. He’s a graduate of The University NC School of the Arts, and was raised in Enfield, NC, where he became his hometown’s first Eagle Scout. Summers during his college years were spent as a leading actor in The Lost Colony, the oldest outdoor drama in the country. While there, David premiered his first original play, Um Dilly.  Upon graduation, he became the first Theatre Arts Consultant for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. A year later, he became Director of The Children’s Theatre of Raleigh and immediately set about the task of broadening the organization’s scope. During this process, the organization established a home in Raleigh’s Pullen Park Armory, changed its name to Theatre In The Park, and quickly becoming the largest community theatre in North Carolina. He has written, starred in, and directed hundreds of theatrical productions over a nearly four decade career … but he is perhaps best known for his heart-warming perennial role as Ebenezer Scrooge in Theatre In The Park’s annual production of A Christmas Carol. I hope you will take a few moments and read more about David; like Peggy Noodle, more than meets the eye!

And, if you keep Christmas in your heart like David does, check out his new book,
Confessions of An Elf.

Carol Crane, HOOPLA! Guest Judge

Carol Crane is the author of fourteen books with Sleeping Bear Press. Carol Crane is a historian and has always been a journal writer. She loves to stop and read historical markers. Traveling around the country, she speaks at reading conventions and schools, networking with children and educators on the fabric that makes up the quilt of this great country. Using information in the state books, she transports kids around the state. Her greatest joy is to have a child say, “Wow! I didn’t know that”.
